In Pakistan relationships
between Government and Journalists often remain tense due to the freedom of
expression.The process of Targeting under punishment journalists is still going
on.News channels which are opposing the official statement they are being pushed
back and forward on cable and influencing the delivery of newspapers and
distribution of advertisements.these all attempts are made to stifle dissent.BBC
URDU try to find out in its series that what is the condition of sencorship in
Pakistan.let’s read today the story of cable operator who is facing pressure.
For being cable
operator there is no law written for us.Yes! but there is only one law for us
that whatever you do is all according to PEMRA. whenever PEMRA wants , whatever
they want they will make any law.
There are maximum 125
channels are running in time. The frequency is about 70 to 75 of channels. Then
this happens that we have choice but PEMRA can also broadcast the channels
which they want.But there is one more thing that we cannot close any channel by
own will.
It has been almost 18
years doing this cable business. In this era I notice that beginning of Pervaiz Musharaf’s era is so easy.The past
five years was so difficult.Maybe it is because of no PEMRA .work has been done
by PTA.Now the compulsion of cable operators is that if they close the channel
which have been praised by many people.so how they will work. Like this cable
cannot run . Now if you say that close all the big channels like GEO, ARY, DAWN
so how does the cable work?
I think that we cable
operators had the worst period of pressure in last government.During this
period not many more but only one channel was told to close is GEO news . This
pressure is not from one side but from three more sides.
PEMRA people used to
say that run GEO and Agencies people used to say that ban GEO. Then GEO
threaten them that if they close us we will go to the court.when court ordered
to stop the ban on GEO still at that time GEO had to close due to higher
orders. GEO went to court and come with orders.
Reality is that some
one called me from an unknown number. Those numbers are not visible on
screens(This is also used for calls which came from secret agencies). In their
calls they only say that they are
talking from Head Quarters. But once I ask that what is your name . they say
leave my name. I said first tell me the reason that why I close the GEO if you
don’t tell me the reason I will not close it.
I said who is up?.
Whose orders are there? So they said child! I don’t know……
Then cut the call. After
five minutes they again call me and said that I called you but you argue with
me and did not close the channel. Now close the GEO in 10 minutes otherwise
truck will come and take everything including you . then you will be
responsible.
I do not want to close
the channel but in the end after so many threats I thought that like this all,
business will close . how can I fight alone.
We want our ROZI ROTI.
We understand that only that things should broadcast which people wants. I
realized that what‘s mine that I fight alone.Actually I gave them chance to
threaten me but honestly they only used to say it very politely that close the
channel because orders are from up.
When I close the GEO
channel they called me and I said to them that we closed the channel so they
said that we know that you close it.
We do not think about
going to court. We do not have enough money to fight case.who will give 40 to
50 lacs for case? At that threatened phone call. I call to PEMRA they do not
replied me correctly . they were double minded. Maybe they were so afraid? They
began to say you see either to close or to open it……
We have told this to
callers that these are the orders of sindh court . court will charge the fine
from us . we have been told do not worry we all are with you. We are
responsible . I said i have no number how you will be responsible . so they
said that we are with country . we are doing this for country.
I said close all the
channels . If think if PEMRA take stand against all this situation. Cable
operators can not close GEO channel. We only heard that GEO broadcast something
illegal. But hence we do not watch all channels . so we do not know that what
did GEO say.
But when there is the
matter of up and down the channels. We do it by own . unknown callers only say
to close the channel . and then
sometimes they forget then after two or four days we run it by ourselves.
Sometimes one day or
for two days but I think if any channel is closed for ten days . It causes to
reduce audience attention which is most dangerous for channel.
It is before few months
of election . An unknown number called and said you don’t impose cencorship.
This channel cannot run in delay. We said this is not our work. It is channel’s
responsibility that they don not broadcast it live but broadcast it after some
seconds.
But this is also not
happens that if there is some political meeting or press conference so that
they told me to do so. Imran khan is coming , Nawaz shareef is coming or another person…..

As a child, my younger brother was prevented from flying kites
Then he caught the insect from the garden which we called a helicopter . Then
we had a thread tied around his tail and we tried to fly him up so after
certain time it stopped flying Then his wings would break or his tail would
break.
It was a childhood that passed away. While
playing all these games, the story came to my mind when the editor forbade me
to print my blog about the Mashal Khan case. He replied me " There is no
shortage in your blog and its appropriate to the case but our organization is
not publishing any blog or summary other than news on this issue ".
The same problem happened to me when i wrote a blog on
'dawn leaks' so after that the editor forbade me by saying something similar
and lame excuses .
So after that I realized that we do not have enough
rights to speak or write about the existing realities after several time i came
to know that there are unseen powers who is controlling the media and freedom
of journalism .
Being a social media user I used to get a lot of updates on
social media and I used to post whatever news going on I did without being
afraid of anyone but after that i realized that Most of the bad social
attitudes , Religious dissent , sexual harassment and peaceful environment on
the border.It doesn't matter if you choose the best words .This becomes the
biggest crime of a woman if she starts writing or analyzing breast cancer , endometrial cancer ( utrine cancer ).Whether it's a rape
case or a growing population issue or a person being killed in religious
narratives.
Anonymous " Someone had said that a free woman speaking on
her own issues is the biggest persecution of our society " We can say that
bone of contention .
Censorship can be different to any organization, just as we live
our lives, we don't do things that are not enough for us, or we have nothing to
do with our own work. And we also have to keep an eye on the mindset of the
readers However, we cannot write about the topics we want to write about
because we know that it is impossible to control the intensity that will come
to us after writing on sensitive issues.
I can't give a high margin to any organization with
justification because it is a marketing mindset. First a product is launched
and then people are told that If you don't take this product, your life will be
empty or you will lose this wonderful thing for the rest of your
life.Censorship policies in Pakistan over the years are even relevent to the
eid card poetry . "ڈبے میں ڈبہ ڈبے میں کیک میرا دوست دوست غلام رسول لاکھوں میں ایک”
Like this is our policy and It does not talk about certain
people or certain things, nor can it be mentioned or written about
them. This is the box of an influential person and we have occupied a box
inside it so that it can't be touched or talked about it. Its high risk factors
or security concerns .
