News,
Opinion or Movement:
Is the news channel coverage of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf and
Tahir-ul-Qadri’s march is impartial and balanced or the media has also become a
part of this campaign?
Many platforms including social media is currently busy in heated
debates on these topics.
Senior journalist Ziauldin Ahmed says” TV channel or no longer
news and views channels. They have become a mean of propagandas. Geo channel is
supporting government’s campaign, but other few big channels has become a part
of campaign that is against government and that is why it is getting so much
coverage.”
These channels have been broadcasting special news from Lahore for
the last several hours. The entire discussion is focused on this march and its
related topics.
The journalist organizations play an active role in Pakistan and
senior journalist Mazhar Abbas also takes part in discussion programs.
He says” not all media but there are some elements in media whose
coverage is reflecting their own wishes. Other than that, there is a part of
media who sympathizes with the government and view this march as elements which
is going to harm democracy.”
Many journalist organization and renowned journalists are calling
at as an important political incident or issue which is taking place in a part
of a country with population of 1800 million. Mazhar Abbas is also among these
journalists.
They say that there is a huge population of common people present
in this march, whom we cannot ignore.
Before this march, the government’s advertising campaign was
running on news channels but unlike the past the advertising campaign of
Tehreek-e-Insaaf and Tahir-ul-Qadri was not present anywhere.
Senior journalist Ziauddin Ahmed says” these channels are getting
funded from someone as they are running programs 24 hours without any
commercial break. It concludes that they are funded by someone as these
channels are not among the losers, they are business minded.”
The head of department of mass communication, Doctor Tauseef Ahmed
from Federal Urdu University thinks that it feels like military is controlling
the message of media and allowing only a single kind of message which is
against democracy.
The effort to control media is far greater than during the times
of Pervaiz Musharaf. During the government of people’s party Memo scandal,
Raiman Davis, Abbottabad operation and the times of check post attacks, these
efforts to control media grew stronger and still holds even after the change of
government.
Doctor Tauseef says that the reason of this media control policy
is to give off a perspective to common people that democracy is weak and
government is not able to resolve matters and that military is the only one who
can resolve these matters. That is why a kind of special message is being
forward.
Senior journalist Mazhar Abbas does not agree with doctor Tauseef.
He says that I cannot say that media is controlled but it does show off
interests of media houses. So, we can say it is a kind of administrative
control not editorial because journalist do not have editorial control in
Pakistan, just like everywhere else in the world.
The news channels which are in Pakistan are infotainment channels.
Senior journalist Ziauddin Ahmed who also remained editor of
country’s renowned English newspaper says that the policy of news and views
rests in the hands of owners. These owners do not have a ground in this
profession, but they are dictating the campaign.
Professional journalist is doing jobs because it is hard to get
jobs in these times and if someone resign after taking these huge salaries, it
can cause big problems. That is why, maybe professional journalists have also
started to make deals.
