The main function of
journalism in terms of purpose and responsibility is to keep the people
informed about political, social, civilized, scientific information or
political issues. This idea is very old but still it has so much importance in
the media departments infect it has become more creative. In today's modern era
of journalism, it has emerged as an organized science that involves teaching, influence
the common opinions, keeping an eye on social wrong things, to search and
protect the basic rights of citizens. The media has been given the status of
the fourth pillar of the state.
Journalism started with
print media which is the most functional medium from the beginning till now and
it has expanded the journalism. Well in actual journalism has started from China
and step by step it has spread all over the Middle East including Japan, USA,
UK and it has spread all over the world even the small towns of subcontinent
are in the enfold of journalism so as like that a revolution took place.
Hyderabad is also included
in these small and big cities where journalism has been started in 1895 when the
first newspaper "Musafir" was published from Hyderabad whose editor
was Shamsuddin Bulbul. There is not so much information about this newspaper
but because of start of journalism in Hyderabad this newspaper holds that
importance. Journalism was at the initial stage at that time due to which there
was no concept of a press club or any special center for journalists but instead
of this the journalism continues to developed day by day in Hyderabad. The
newspapers have tried every effort to improve the worldly, ethical, social and social
odds here and they achieved success. The newspapers of Hyderabad did not hang
back in religious matters and in many different departments many different
newspapers came which published Islam and keep continue the Muslim
movements.Next we will read which newspaper came in which periods and what was its
purpose.
The start of twentieth
century was a golden age for Hyderabad journalism. When “ALHAQ” newspaper moved
from Sukkur to Hyderabad in 1901. At first this newspaper was used to be published
in English and Sindhi. For English side the barrister and the incharge was Ali
Muhammad when Shams-uddin-Bulbul was the editor of Sindhi side for just some
time.
The historian Peer Hassam-uddin-Rashidi
writes in his book that the first Muslim national newspaper in Sindh was
Al-Haq. “Al-Haq” also had the tribute of having the well known journalists and
editors of Hyderabad working in this publication. Among them were Mir Ali
Mohammad Dehlwi, Shams-Uddin-Bulbul, Mohammad Hashim Mukhlis and Hakim Fateh
Muhammad Sabu Bhai were also included. The owner of this newspaper was Sheikh
Mohammad Suleman and after his death his sons took over the newspaper. Journalism
of Hyderabad has played a prominent role in the growth of education and in the
same section the Sindh ministry of education published a magazine
“AKHBAR-E-TALEEM” under Hyderabad College foreman this magazine was issued in
1902. At that time the principal of the college was Dewan Shawki Ram Tara Chand
who being an expert educated person himself tried to make education common and
popular. Dewan Bol Chand was the special editor of this magazine. The magazine
used to publish great articles on education, culture and history. In this
magazine the news publishing was mostly about students or for some other
education issues. This magazine continues to be published till 1970. Journalism
of Hyderabad and newspapers also provide news about business and landlordism.
In 1909 a monthly "Zamindar Gazette" was published from Hyderabad
whose editor was Drumming Damsling. This Gazette was popular among the
landlords and business districts because itwas for to protect their interest.
This Gazette was consisted on 32 pages.
In 1912 Khushi Ram
Motomal started a monthly newspaper "Tawals" from Hyderabad which purpose
was to promote novels. This newspaper consisted on40 pages and mostly they published
novels. The readership of this newspaper was a lot and because of that it also promotes
the novel in Sindhi language. At the end of the same year Mr. Kundan mill
started the monthly magazine "Novel". In 1916 from Hyderabad a
newspaper called "Hindu" was started. This newspaper was first used
to be publish weekly but because of its increase in readership it has been
converted into daily newspaper. The magazine "Al-Hafiz" was published
from Hyderabad in 1919 whose editor was Hafiz Hayat. This paper used to be
published from Leto Press Karachi.
In 1921Sargawasi Jaitmal Parsaram started
a monthly magazine called "Roh-e-Rehan" to promote the teachings of
Sufism and Unitarianism. The idea based on the publication of this newspaper was
to convey the teachings of all religions. It includes the writings of religious
leaders, poets, philosophers and scholars from different religion. This
newspaper continued to be published with different names till 1926 and was
closed in 1926. In that same year “Ghancha” named newspaper starts to publish.
During that period “Gancha Omid” a monthly scholarly and literary magazine was
also published, Mr. Aidan Mil Manghraj was the editor of this magazine.This
newspaper used to be printed in the Krishna printing press in Hyderabad.
Besides this there are many other important newspapers mentioned in the history
of Hyderabad which have received a huge praise. The exact date of these newspaper
are not confirm. One of these such types of newspapers and magazines there was a
monthly magazine “Deepika” in which articles on education, science and ethics
were published and also stories were published. In 1928 Maulvi Khair Mohammad
Nizamani started a weekly newspaper "Khadim Islam" from Hyderabad. Apart
from this during the same periods “Hyderabad Gazette” was also started. In 1930
the daily newspaper "Sindh Shivak" was also started which was
published by Thala Ram Balani from Hyderabad. In 1931 Khan Bahadur Muhammad
Siddique Memon started a magazine "Gulzar" from Hyderabad. In the
history of Hyderabad there are many newspapers who started publishing with only
one language but they changed their language later because of lack of
acceptance. “Kesri” named weekly newspaper is also included in these newspapers.
The editor of this issue was Swami Govind who were a strict Hindu. Instead of
Arabi he published his newspaper in Dewanagri language which was a ancient
language of Hindus but because of lack of acceptance later he has to publish
his newspaper in the Arabi language this newspaper later turned into a daily
newspaper. In 1934 weekly newspaper "New Muslim" was started from
Hyderabad by Sheikh Abdullah. During the same periods two more weekly
newspapers "Fateh" and "Chand" were also published. In the
end of 1936 “Sindh Daily News” was startedand its editors was L. Panwari. this
newspaper was also published in Karachi.Al-Kamil was published in Hyderabad in
the same year this was published by Kamal-ud-Din Memon who was the expert of
Social and national work and G.M Memon was its editor.
During the periods of
1941 Mohammad Usman Diplai started the monthly "Ibrat" from Hyderabad
this newspaper turned into a weekly newspaper on 13th February
1946. In 1956 after the purchase of the
Qazi family it changes into a daily newspaper.There are countless favours of
Ibrat Group of Publications for Sindhi Journalism. Sheikh Ali Mohammad remained
the editor of "Ibrat" after it was changed to a monthly and daily
newspaper. In 1969 when he resigned so after him Khair Mohammad Khokhar was made
the editor of the newspaper which remained its editor till 2006 untill his
death. The senior chief editor of this newspaper was Qazi Asad Abid.Who is not just
because of a journalist but also known as a political and social activist. From
the past 31 years the 15 days Ibrat magazine keep publishing and apart from
this weekly “Sindhu" monthly "Thousand Stories Digest" monthly
"Bakhtawar Magazine" keep publishing for so many years.
In 1946 on 5thNovember,
“Hilal-e-Pakistan” was launched from Hyderabad whose first editor was Rahim Dad
Khan. In the same year “ NayaZamana” Sindhi newspaper was also published in
Hyderabad whose owner was GM Khan and Muhammad Ismail Munshi was its editor. In
that same period “Nayin Dunia” and “Baaghi” magazine was also published. In
1947 Sheikh Ali Mohammad published the daily newspaper "Aftab" from
Hyderabad. In the same year 1947 a magazine was published in the memory of
Maharaaj Swami Hamraaj this magazine was consist on 12 to 13 pages in this
magazine poetry was highlighted more than prose. Majority of the content of this
magazine was based on Sufism and Unitarianism.
Hyderabad is of great
importance in terms of journalism as its newspapers, journals and gazettes have
always provides the services to the common public and also Hyderabad's
journalism has produced some of the most famous journalists of the time which
includes Gurmak Singh, Maulana Abdullah Sindhi, Mohammad Usman Diplai are worth
mentioning.
