Journalism in Hyderabad from 1977 to 1988
When the armed forces took control of the country on July 5, 1977, the country was engulfed in various protests and riots were taking place in major cities. Martial law was also enforced on a limited scale in Hyderabad. General Zia-ul-Haq In his first address, he promised the people that he would hold elections within 90 days. Until then, every institution would have complete freedom. The press and media also have self-determination. But these words remained only to the extent of speech because history Witness the fact that Zia-ul-Haq's era is the darkest era of journalism. For the first time in Zia's era, newspapers were censored. It would require that permission be obtained from a government official before publishing anything, but journalists were not allowed to do so, which led to their punishment.
In the eighties, there were experiments in publishing Urdu newspapers. The first experiment was with daily Safir. The editor of which was Sohail Sangi.
In 1978, at intervals of a month, Ali Hassan's pamphlet Weekly Bedari and Weekly Manzil were raided and the police took all the records and equipment. The team included Ali Hassan, SohailSangi, Khuda Bakhsh Abro, and Akbar Soomro. As a result, Ali Hassan and his team had to stay underground for some time.
During the same period, copies of newspapers were burnt in protest against the suppression of statements during various meetings. Pre-censorship was imposed on the Sindhi newspaper Mehran, as a result of which the editor of the newspaper, Shamshir, resigned. Another Sindhi newspaper, Ibrat, was also banned. Nisar Chana's weekly Nawa-e-Jang also became a target of martial law and did not last long.
For the first time in the history of Pakistan's journalism, journalists were imprisoned and flogged. When the freedom of the press movement started, workers and students were arrested along with journalists. Among them were labor leaders Mehboob Ali, Qalandar Bakhsh Mehr, Taj Murree, Abdul Hai. AshfaqPyare, Mohammad Bakhsh Baloch, and Irshad Chana were released after their imprisonment. Hyderabad-based journalists Abdul Ghani Dars (Daily Ibrat) and Zahid Simon (Daily Aftab) went to Lahore and presented their arrests and were flogged and imprisoned. ۔
In August 1980, senior journalist SohailSangi was arrested along with Kamal Warsi, Shabir Shar, Jamal Naqvi, and BadrAbro in the Jam Saqi case. He was tried in a special military court. He was imprisoned for five years and on November 11, 1985, he was transferred to the Martial Law Administrator. The order was revoked.
Journalists have been prevented and harassed from performing their normal duties on various occasions and all this has been done in front of law enforcement but they have remained unaware of the troubles that befell journalists.
Despite the difficulties faced by journalism, many newspapers were launched in Hyderabad and sudarkurnalists came to the fore who have gained prominence in various magazines and institutions today.

Practical work carried under supervision of Sir Sohail Sangi
