Role of Sindhi Women in Journalism
A book published by ‘Sahtiya’

there was no role of Sindhi women in journalism, late on Sado Heramand, Dewan
Koryal Chandanal and other note able tried for improvement of female education
for Sindhi women and rights for it, in 1890 Sado Heranand published a magazine
with the name of ‘Sudhar Patrika’ first time in Sindh for women, it was
published in Gurmukhi alphabet, after the partition females actively
participated in Sindhi literature and journalism in Sindh and India. In 1957
Begam Zeenat Abdullah Channa well known social activist also published in
monthly Sindhi magazine for females from Hyderabad in the name of ‘Marui’. Same
likewise, Begum Khadija Khanam Daudpoto also published in memory of Shams ul
ulma, Dr Umer bin Daudpoto. In 1980 Umer ud din Bedar published the same
magazine for some time, In 1918 Fareeda Basheer was assistant editor of this magazine,
firstly was published from Karachi, than from Hyderabad and there from Karachi,
in these magazine stories, poetries and essays was published which inspired the
Sindhi women writers. Furthermore beside these magazine, Sindhi newspapers also
published women’s especial pages on their newspapers. In the decade of 70s Mrs.
ZA Sheikh was in charge of female page of Daily Ibrat Hyderabad, She was sister
of well-known Journalist Shaikh Aziz, In decade of 70s Dolat Mehtari also
published a Sindhi magazine namely ‘Sojro’, these Sindhi Magazine also printed
with new colorful technology. Gulbano Sultan was editor of that magazine and
Famida Memon was assistant editor, in that magazine other writer was Sherin
Farooqui, Irshad Qamar, Zohra Ansari, Kamla Mehtari and Nargis Latuf who edited
various chapters of cooking, question answers, column, fashion, children page
etc. Due to this magazine new female writers were came in existence, after some
time Sehar Baloch was appointed as assistant editor, there was significant role
of Dr Famida Hussain chairperson Sindhi language authority in Sindhi
journalism, she was remained in charge of women’s page in magazine ‘Badal’ from
1968 to 1972 published from Hyderabad, there after she was remained in charge
of women’s page of daily newspaper ‘Halal’ paper Karachi from 1972 to 1984. The
name of said page was ‘Sugarin Sath’, there after she remained in charge of
women page of ‘Daily Jago’ from 1992 to 1995. In the decade of 2000 she was
writer of weekly column in ‘Awami Awaz’, she also published monthly magazine in
the name of ‘Sugharin Sath. From 1989 from Karachi, she was chief editor of
said magazine and Aneesa Rehman was its managing editor, it was first computer
composed magazine of Sindhi, which was composed of Sindhi poet Aliya Dawood and
its publisher was Aneesa Rehman, the writer of this magazine were Naseem
Haidri, Tasneem Bhatti, Razia Khokhar and other Sindhi female and male writers
were included. Famida Hussain was also worked on ‘Radio Pakistan’ from 1968to
2010 for Sindh learning, translation and script writing, Mehtab Akbar Rashidi
also worked with PTV and radio from 1974 to 1980. In the decade of 1980 Sindhi
poetess Sultana Waqasi, who was lecturer in government college Karachi, was
remained in charge of women page of ‘Daily Halal Pakistan’.
In the decade of 80 poet
Nazeer Naz also established ‘Nari’ publication and publish their magazine in
the name of ‘Nari’ and she was editor of that magazine, which published serval
magazine. In 1990 Zarina Hussain Nareejo also published magazine of two weekly
in the name of ‘Subh Thendo’ its deceleration from Larkana but it was published
from Karachi, in which all writers were mail except few one, In all the
writings was politically motivated. In 1994 in other monthly magazine was
published from Karachi named ‘Parkh’. The managing director namely editor was
Shagifta Mansoor. Now a days editor of ‘Mehran’ magazine published by Sindhi Adbi
board is Samina Memon, After partition there were many female writers came into
existence, and they became poets and strong writers but only few females worked
as journalist from the old Sindhi of Karachi, one was photographer also,
hername is not known, finally Nafeesa Hood Bai was the first professional
journalist who worked as staff reporter for 16 years in daily English newspaper
‘Dawn’, thereafter in the end of 1990 decade she married and shifted to
America, where she is working for ‘Voice of America’, in the decade of 1980
another female Lala Rukh studied in Karachi University, worked with association
press of Pakistan as a staff reporter, there after she shifted at America, her
ancestors originally belongs to Shikarpur, few years ago she died in America.
Due to Sindhi newspaper, magazine and education which provides opportunities to
Sindhi female writers for conducting interviews and written articles of
newspapers. Atia Dawood, Safia Sindhu, Kulsoom Sindhi and others were included
in the list. ‘Daily Kawash’ newspaper was published in Hyderabad in 1990, in
which many Sindhi writers written political and social analysis in daily
kawash. These were Amar Sindho, Irfana Mallah, Bina Shah, Anita Shah, Gulshan
Laghari, Wegas Haseen Musarat Shah, Fozia Bano, Sehar Gul Bhatti, Tania Thaebo,
Shabnam Gul and Zahida Goopang etc. In 1990 Sindhi Adbi Board also published female
weekly ‘Satiyo’, in the editorship of Gul Badan Jawed Mirza. Female magazine
namely ‘Bakhtawer’ was also published from Daily Ibrat in editorship of Shaila
Asad Abbasi, and other female magazine namely ‘Halar’ was also published by
Kawish group in the under editorship of Abida Zafar Abbasi, in the era Sindhi
writers worked newspapers. In the decade of 70s Anees Memon, Sehar Baloch and Fozia
Qureshi also worked as newscaster at PTV. In 80s and 90s on PTV children’s
program ‘Roshan Tara’ was also hosted by Mehtab Rashidi, Rukhsana Aklari and
others.
In 1997 Tahira Baloch started
work with Daily Kawish in Hyderabad, there after she worked in Karachi in same
newspaper, therefore she was shifted at Islamabad where she worked as bureau
chief of Daily Sindh Hyderabad and “Daily Halchal Karachi’, now a days she is
working for Sindh TV. One Sindhi girl namely Asiya Baloch working with Sindh TV
from Sukkar since last year. Ambreen Hasbari, worked in ‘Khadm Watan’ and
‘Kawash Newspaper’, like the newscaster of TV. Nazia Memon before coming in
electronic media worked in ‘Kawash Newspaper’, Wegas is still working in Daily
Ibrat. Sanober Gul Unar was also working for ‘Daily Ibrat’ and ‘Sindh
Newspaper’. Daughter of Khan Muhmmad Panhwar Suhni Paras is working in
Hyderabad office of ‘Daily Jeejal’ one newspaper namely ‘Momal’ is published
from Karachi previously it was edited by late Azad Jatoi after his death its
editorship belongs to Haseena Jatoi. There are Sindhi Female journalists working
for Sindhi newspapers are included Gul Badan Asif Misrari, Pirah Mangi, Famida
Jarwar, Shah Parveen Abro, Sajida Chandio, Taj Abro, Zahida Taj Abro and Sherin
Zour. Nusrat FM Lashari, Nazneen Ali Husain Chandio, Erum Dars, Saeeda Chandio.
Saeeda Bashir Chandio, Zeeba Lashari, Amarta Somrro, Pirah Sakeena Gadh, Nayab
Sarakash Sindhi and Mehwish Abbasi are article writer in Sindhi Newspaper, ne
girl namely Azra Syed worked with ‘Daily the English newspaper’ for some years
as a reporter thereafter shifted at London. Beena Shah is working as columnist
in ‘Daily Dawn’ and she belongs to Jamote family of Matiyari.
When Kazi Saeed Akber started
English newspaper ‘Regional Times’ from karachi in 2002, which Sheren Somrro
worked as a news editor serval years, there after she shifted in NGO sector.
Now a days Mehrun nisa of Larkana is working as staff reporter for KTN, Sindh
TV channel at Karachi. In 2001 Shabnam Nawaz started her career from PTV, after
comparing she became an actor. Another reporter namely Saba Bajeer also started
work as KTN reporter, furthermore daughter of well-known personality of Karachi
Mohammad Sadiq Khady Waro namely Maria Ismail Memonis working as reporter for
various newspaper since last eight years. Now a days she is working as court
news for ‘Awami Awaz Newspaper’ she is first Sindhi court news reporter. Sindhi
electronic media provides opportunity to many Sindhi Girls to work with them as
newscaster like Sabeen Memon, Najia Meer, Nida Abro, Sanam Sindhi, Shumaila,
Shagifta, Nomeeta Gul, Tuba Gumro and others. Granddaughter f poet Sarkash
Sindhi namely Murk Chandio also worked with current affairs of Sindh TV news,
Maheen Hesbari also hosted programs on Sindhi Channels.
Many Sindhi females are
actively participating in journalism outside Sindh, Karishma Waswari, her
elders belongs to Hyderabad, was born in Singapore and get education on Hong
Kong and worked as first business reporter for BBC in Mumbai, and nowadays she
is representing BBC at Malaysia. Tarsha Devi born in America and educated there
and her articles are printed in six countries, she is also writing for English
magazine of Sandhi’s, ‘Beyond Sindh’. Rachna peer Pori was born in Philippian
west after she resident in West Africa and America and other countries and now
she is publishing editor of ‘Beyond Sindh’, Articles written by her. Pushpa
Morchari was born in Jaipur Rajasthan and thereafter shifted in Mumbai, she was
also resident in Siri Nam and Keri Island. In 2002 she returns back, she is
also author of two books of computer on children and one book on Sindhi
recipes, she is also writer of ‘Beyond Sindh Magazine’ Pooja Khayari is feature
editor of ‘Beyond Sindh, Pooja belongs to well-known family of Sindhi writers.
Sindhi Atam Chandari, born in Japan and graduated in marketing communication.
Bangkok born Pooja Kashmani is web designer of ‘Beyond Sindh’. Neeto Sabnani
Meer Chandani was born and educated in California and she is staff writer of
Sindh, Bangkok born marketing communication graduate Monika Harbani, Maneela
born and communication graduate of California, Deena Sanbwani and Maneela Born
Kanchan Shahdad Bai are also writer of same magazine, Kanchan remain marketing
executive for ‘Gulf Newspaper’ at Dubai and other Sindhi Angli Karpalai born in
Mumbai now reside at south Africa and Lagos (Nigeria) with parents, she left
the service of corporate sector and joined journalism and her written articles
of ‘Opra magazine’ of South Africa, she also writes dramas for ‘Lotus FM
Radio’. From 2005 she worked as free lanced journalist and worked for radio in
India, nowadays she is reporter of Indian ‘NDTV’. Wena Shirangi is working with
‘All India Radio, since 80s, she is also host of Sindhi program other than
Sindhi news, she also published a book on memory in respect of radio Delhi
‘Munja Paishy ja Gul o khar’.
Sister of Wena namely Shalni
Sagar also belongs to radio Delhi and she is also conducting Sindhi Programs.
Pooja Thakar wife of Hero Thakar remained with news field, furthermore Kaka
Balah also remained at journalism, therefore Sindhi women made a significant in
the field of journalism.
