How to write headlines? Basics by Sohail Sangi

What is headline?

Headline is a collection of words that give the meaning and essence of the content to catch the attention of the readers. It is at the top of the content having distinct writing style and font size.

What are the functions of headlines?

1) First and foremost function of the headline is to give the meaning, essence and reflecting the genre of content.

2) To grab the attention of readers.

3) To portray the importance of the news through the way of writing.

4) It helps to draw the layout of the newspaper.

Structure of Headline

The structure of the headline can be divided into two parts i.e. primary and secondary part.

Primary part

The part of a headline that helps to grab the attention, provides most important facts and figures and gives the essence of the content. Usually it has bigger font size then the secondary part.

Secondary part

The secondary part of headline supports the primary part and give the additional information of the news. The functions of the secondary part are to supplement and support the primary part, helps in formatting layout and give additional information of the news. The secondary part of the headline should be written in a way that holds the attention of the reader.

Types of Headlines

There are many types of headline on the basis of layout of newspaper, writing style and designs.

Streamer/ Main Lead

The form of headline that cover complete eight columns of thepage in newspaper. It is called banner lead or main lead.

Anchor lead

A news of five or eight columns at the bottom of page is called anchor lead.

Super Lead

According to the layout of newspaper, the super leadis first news. It the most important news after the main lead. It is left to the name plate, it may be comprised of five to three columns.

Hammer, Kicker and Tripod

Hammer is word that hits the mind of the reader as a hammer. It may be consist of two words, to give the meaning of the headline. Kicker is the collection of the words that are at the top of the main headline. The kicker is written in small font size while the hammer is written in the bigger and the broader size. Tripod is the detailed information of headline that supports the news as a tripod.

News writing

There are several rules for news writing.

Before writing news first you should read the article thoroughly and understand it.

Know your readers for whom you want to write, weather they are students, labour or public.

Understand the tone or the nature of news.

Mind the space allotted for news. Weather the news is of two columns or three columns, first know plot then make the news headline.

News should be written in way that hooks the attention of the readers.

Rules for writing news Headline

In English newspaper headline is written in present tense and active voice is followed, rarely headlines are written in passive voice. While writing headline in English articles (a, the, (conjunction; and)) are avoided instead of it comma is used and proper noun is used instead of pronoun.

In headline 3Ps are most important: precise, provoking and personalized.

Precise: Headline should be short and give complete sense.

Provoking:The news should initiate reader to critically analyze the issue.

Personalized:It means your creativity and your wisdom should be reflected by the news. It does not mean that you should add your point of views in the news.

Also mind the tone of the news while writing headline. If the news is straight write a straight headline, if it is the news of celebration or of morn you should write it regarding its tone.

Methods of writing Headline

Read the article thoroughly and understand it, know the essence of the content. Then write two or more words from the essence of the content and add few more to make a complete meaningful sentence and try to avoid grammatical mistakes. Edit your sentence means reduce the number of words without affecting the real meaning of the news. That will help to make headline.

2) Who controls media?

What & Who Control Media? Sohail Sangi

The control of media can be divided in to two forms internal control and external control.

Internal control

The editor, sub editor reporters, their education, their point of views, thoughts, and backgroundgive reflection while editing news.

External control

The whole media is controlled by few organizations. These organization has authority to control where, when, which and how the content should be released. These organization has financial power, techniques and talent.

A study revealed that mainly only five companies own media, including the internet, cartoons or film producers, radio, or TV. We can say from newspaper to radio, radio to TV the media is under the control of few organizations. These organizations has impact on the economical interest and public perceptions then they try to create content like them or portray their content in media.

This ownership of media is called corporate owner ship they are determentjust to focus on how to gain more and more profit regardless of what public wants, it is revers of good journalism. Day by day these companies are becoming lager and they have power which product will be promoted, how to change the public point of view? Which political party will get coverage? That mean only few bodies can change the opinion. This is not only in Pakistan but also in other countries.

Media outlets are for getting profit, TV, internet, newspaper and radio work for commercial advertisement as advertisement is way of getting profit. These companies supports those media outlets that promote them and try to degrade other media outlets does not support their product.

World’s media works under the government’s policy. The official policy is followed by the media and the government has power to sponsors the anchor without it on any TV channel can sponsor anchor. In Pakistan mostly official departments give advertisements to media. They have to follow official policies.

Every company has public relation industry, they just try to promote their product. They create connection with some reporters and provide them facilities. In this way PR industry has impact on news. Media is also controlled by the pressure groups like in civil society grass root activators. Pressure groups are also funded by some companies and these pressure groups provides interest to these companies. Sometimes these pressure groups may negatively impacts on media, in some cases reporter cannot report th

Feedback on YouTube lectures

Submitted to: Sir Sohail Sangi

Being in a process of becoming able to step in media industry with skills and ideas, the lectures posted in Sir Sangi’s YouTube channel are quite informative and helpful in learning new things and getting ideas of what to do and how.

The videos that I personally thought incomparable in letting a media person ‘to be’ know about that how the process of construction of newspaper and its things goes, were “How to write Headlines” and “Sub-editor: Roles and Responsibilities.”

What I learn?

Before watching the online lectures, I just knew that what is headline and what are some duties of Sub-editor. But right after, I came to know sub-editor and its duties wholly. He is the man who does the leading role in being disguised as nothing at all. It is his responsibilities from accessing the raw news material to the layout of the newspaper. Besides checking the facts and editing the news story, he is responsible to add values, to make surenewspaper policy being followed in paper, translation of the news story, liaising with journalists, verification of the information, copyright issues, libel laws, placement and sizes of news stories, font size, graphic details, headline writing and layout of newspaper.

The other thing that was new to me was the types of headlines. I never knew before the name of headlines including Streamer, Anchor, Super, Hammer, Kicker and Tripod. I got how to write headlines, their structure, rules for writing them especially in English newspaper and how they should be.

What & Who Control Media? By Sohail Sangi

Firstly, I will discuss editing, its process and steps.

Editing is the main process and has great importance in the field of media.

So in this process where any image, message, disk or video goes under process of rechecking and reforming the mode and structure of information before publishing in any newspaper or to any organization.

Not only in the media but in all publications, the first thing we do is to recheck all the faults and reshape the errors.

•When any reporter writes news after he or she gets done with editing the piece, the way the paragraph is written transforms and it completes after the editor crosschecks the information.

It basically reorganizes the facts and style of writing.

•This process gives more potential and uniqueness to the content and transforms whole data.

•Editing is the one thing that changes the whole decor of the writing and tries to convey the message in a formal and well- detailed manner which beautifies the material.

•There are 4 important things we have to know before editing any news or other content.

1- Material ( it can be in any form like a feature, article etc).

2-Language ( see what language is used and convey the message with related topics).

3-Spelling and Grammar ( we have to check errors and faults of spellings, structure and style of writing and most importantly punctuations).

•Do such a process which allows the audience to understand the content more easily.

•Format is also known as an important factor while we do editing, we must know what the topic is about and the facts are related to the topic.

•The main phrase of news is what is being conveyed and at last, where the conclusion stands.

Editing has four steps:

•Mechanical like solving errors and spelling and grammar.

•Techniques like reshaping the content language.

•Re-editing like rechecking the facts and errors.

• Improves the Data which gives new shapes to the message and the reporter notifies and  conveys his message that is related to the topic with all facts or not.

•All organizations have different styles and languages of doing editing but in the media the most common style is AP, Associated Press.

In editing, accuracy is most important which is to clear the data and try to show things to the point.

After the editing it gives clarity of content that proves the information and reshaping that may easily get caught by viewers in a formal manner.

Editing also focuses on tone over how the news is delivered and what is the genre of the news and see if facts are real and clear to the related topic.

Don't practice discrimination in the editing because this is an important factor of media and contents of news depends on editing, readers are neutral in all stage, thus don't be biased while selecting the information.

• Editor itself does cross-checking and gives background, adds pictures by themselves while doing editing which beautifies and enhances the content of news.

2-what & who controls media:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SnJxyahhTDc&t=148s

What & Who Control Media? by Sohail Sangi

Media is becoming a hot topic nowadays about who controls the media.

Media is mostly divided into two aspect:

Internal

External

*Internal control where it includes editors and sub editors; educating their knowledge, ideas, perspective and thoughts to show as it reflects their interest in the news and how they want to convey the media message or how they are gonna handle or edit the news and share their knowledge to the public.

External control :

In European countries or in our country too, the media organization is under control by companies .

It depends on the official head what and how they wanted to show their content because it's fully controlled by it and they have sort of techniques and talent to rule over it because media organizations are paid by such companies and they get advertisements and huge profit from them.

It depends on the companies how they convey their ideas through media channels, who will work and who gets more time on screen, which anchor or actor will work and whose political party will get more time on TV screen.

Media officials and big companies are totally linked with each other's profits.

Official agenda controls who gets full coverage, such as everything.

Corporate ownership also gets in touch with media organizations because they only have to earn money and profit and as media also want to promote their work because they get Ads from them.

Big companies have full control over media houses like FM radio,TV and they achieve their licences.

PR industry is also good to promote their products or Ads.

Pressure groups also work with powerful people if they wanna survive and want  advertisements because one should know that advertisements are important to run a channel or company, with Ads, they get money and profit.

If someone wants to work with anyone on channels or drama, then he or she will be on good terms with the official and follow the demands if they want to work and get benefits.

Review on the lecture of topic Good standards of journalism’by sir Sohail Sangi.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wLPRCKQ-9P4&t=1s

As we all know that media is playing a major role in our society and in it’s development because it can effect the psyche of thousands of people. As the topic name good standards of journalism suggests that positivity in journalism, in journalists or in media. Hence in this lecture it was all described well about the good and positive behaviour of journalists and media..

In this lecture four main elements was defined which are included in good standards of journalism. And the first one was‘seek truth and report’and it was all about the accuracy and honest reporting. And it was clearly described in simple words like what step media should take to play it’s role truthfully and how they would purify their intentions for the sake of it’s viewers. And the example of shopkeeper in the context ofsource was best enough to tell students how a good journalist should work.

The next one was about the care of surroundings like journalist should be able to take care of this listeners and his source as well. And he or she being a journalist or reporter, and if he or she is reporting about something that will obviously concerted with the victim or his family so they must try to deal with respect because they are facing the damage. In reporting they must be attentive to reduce this kind of things which can effect their self respect. Hence it is known as ‘minimise harm'.

The third one was about the pure character of journalist like he has to perform his job with free of greed and personal purposes. Like a journalist should report as it is without any fear and of any politician. That’s why this element is know as ‘act independently’. This term was really explained well with good examples which was given by the lecturer.

The last and the fourth one was about that journalists who stand on their words. Like a journalist or a reporter gives a news or information about anything so he or she must remain on his words which must contain reality and truth. So after the publication of it he must have confidence on his information or he should not step back. If someone asks  him about the proves so he or she must be able to answer them with facts and clear their doubts with respect. That’s why this element is know as ‘be accountable and transparent’.In this element the example of picture was very perfect to explain it and I really appreciate it.

So this lecture is very informative and it is easy to understand because the language which was used in video was really simple and clear. So any student can catch it easily. These four elements was described with complete plainness. So I will suggest it to those media students who want to know about the positive side of media so he or she must watch it and I hope it will be useful for them.

Like a journalist should report as it is without any fear and of any politician. That’s why this element is know as ‘act independently’. This term was really explained well with good examples which was given by thelecturer.

The last and the fourth one was about that journalists who stand on their words. Like a journalist or a reporter gives a news or information about anything so he or she must remain on his words which must contain reality and truth. So after the publication of it he must have confidence on his information or he should not step back. If someone asks

So this lecture is very informative and it is easy to understand because the language which was used in video was really simple and clear. So any student can catch it easily. These four elements was described with complete plainness. So I will suggest it to those media studentswho want to know about the positive side of media so he or she must watch it and I hope it will be useful for them.

Review on the lecture of topic‘Difference between newspaperand magazine’

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3GHa7RFEVU

As the topic's name suggests that the difference between newspaper and magazineis all about its major and minor differences and the deviation between them and their unlikeness between them. So what we discussed in the class are all about it.And also there are few similarities between them and the major one is that whether it is a newspaper or magazine their purpose is same to deliver the information but that information, which is presented in them has the different ways of writing and content. And another one is that, they both belong to print media.

And secondly the major differences between them are here, like their unlikeness in way of writing, their price, their quality of papers, length of material and also the main one is the difference of time period of publication between them. Magazines also publishes the interviews of different personalities like of those candidates who has cleared the CSS exams whether the newspapers are free of it.

So this lecture contains the main points on differences and also some similarities between them and were described in a good and simple way in a short length of video. And its language that can be read and its way of delivering can be understand by any student. And also its was described in it that which magazinestudents should study like Herald. So overall it was an informative and a good lecture in a form of video about this topic and I will suggest it to every media student to watch it and I hope this information will be useful for them and they can easily understand it.
