Water, water everywhere, when Hyderabad
was sunk
NOOR-UL-AIN SIDDIQUI 2k18/MC/118
2nd semester Nov 2020
Is it
possible to regard Hyderabad a peaceful city without any societal issues. There
are many burning issues that Hyderabad the second largest city of Sindh is
currently facing, the problem of drainage system and sewerage water remain a
highlighted issue since few decades. Poor drainage system and sewerage water
has always remained a major headache of residents of this city and heavy rains
from past few years act as a catalyst to this raising concern. Qasimabad
Hyderabad is considered as the most desired residential area, citizen colony
and Gulistan e sajjad comes under posh categories, but the heavy rains and poor
drainage system tells an entirely different story. Being a VIP area the
condition of roads and neighborhoods are not satisfactory, due to bumpy roads,
open gutter line and piles of rubbish, the sewerage water remain at the main
roads and cause great difficulties for the residents. The people remained
helpless as they could not evacuate the place and many areas of Hyderabad were
submerged under water for weeks.
The
population of Qasimabad according to 2017 Celsius is 304,899 and that will make
approximately 35 percent of population in the concerned areas. The recent rains
in Hyderabad reveals a lot about our administration as well, in 2019 there was
around 50+ mm rainfall and in 2020 around 200 mm, but the areas due to
neglected governance turned into ponds and rivers. (Describe what
Civil
administration, Deputy Commissioners, Assistant commissioners to Mukhtiarkars
tried to personally handle rainy situations in their particular areas and PDMA
had provided around 10 dewatering pumps to Municipal department but they were
not operated in Qasimabad due to lack of skills of staff to install and operate
them. Even WASA the water and sanitation Agency was out of power due to heavy
downpour and that effect gravely, in disposal of water. In a press conference
held on 27th August 2020
Chief Minister of Sindh Syed Murad Ali Shah said Hesco the electric supply
company of Hyderabad failed to supply power to WASA in that result many areas
remained under water for several days and weeks. Many political members visited
the effected areas and record their statements Awami Tehreek leader Ayaz Latif
Palijo visited the areas of Qasimabad including Citizen Colony,
Gulistan-e-Sajjad and Bhitai town and blamed Sindh government for incompetence
and negligence of authorities.
Hyderabad
municipal corporation and WASA have already questionable serves and relying on
them with Moonsoon and urban flooding is rather worrisome. (
These both
organizations are meant to work throughout the year but due to their negligence
people suffer, they deliberately delay their tasks and add everything to cause
major shortcomings. These issues including urban flooding cause psychological
and financial problems for the residents, a lot of expenses were lost to these
floods and people suffer mentally as well. We do not have a proper drain out
system, if these organizations are draining out water but they do not have a
system to do it, in citizen colony and Gulistan-e-Sajjad the drainage water
which was drained out after weeks of suffering and that water was released in
graveyards, it was really a moment of shame for everyone, as a society we are
also a part of it, and that water was literally, left there to dry out
naturally.
Residents of
different areas of Hyderabad gathered (when) at press Club Hyderabad to record their
protest against Authorities, WASA and Hesco, they complain about the drainage
water that is inside their homes and street, their was shortage of drinking
water as well. Protesters complained about the power shortage and even after 4
to 5 days the problem is not resolved. This thing happens to me as well there
was power shortage for a full whole week in Citizen Colony Hyderabad and all
the complains were to no avail. I remember it was 9th of Muharam and in that sacred night our area
was out of power and same situation was the other day as well. Poor drainage
system and sewerage water have caused health issues as well, the stagnant water
serves as a sources for many diseases causing mosquitoes and flies and even
cause foul odor. Diseases like Cholera, hepatitis, malaria, diarrhea and
typhoid fever ( figures and facts, No of cases reported plus concrete examples). Fungi also grow in moist areas and cause fungal diseases as
well. Health is an important issue which needs proper attention (What proper attention? sepcify) by the
authorities, in rainy seasons usually there is a great raise in diseases and
disease causing agents.
To tackle
with these unwanted issues we as a citizen and nation, need to work together,
not only organizations are going to solve these issues, public awareness is
necessary to deal with these situations, in public awareness we need to aware
citizens to maintain cleanness that include their Mullahs and streets and
proper coverage of gutters.
Monthly cleaning
of drains by authorities should be made mandatory and there should be check and
balance of that. Inception of areas by respective people and any concerned
authorities should be made. There should be construction of roads, the bumpy
roads are cause of stagnant water. Early precautions should be made to deal
with these situation that these conditions will not go out of hands.
There should be area wise administration that will monitor the conditions
and progress which is made, made decisions based on residents welfare and also
include them in the decision making process because they have better knowledge
of their own area.
Monthly
meetings should be held to check and inquire the problems of the citizens and
monthly tasks should be design to follow that through out the month, so that
work should be complete on time and not delayed. As a citizen of the concerned
area, I myself witnessed these issues. My whole house was under water in
monsoons of 2019 and 2020 and it was heart wrenching to see such destructive
situation of my area which somehow
looks perfectly
fine and worn out from the insides and these natural disasters unveil the true
face of our administrations, city government and society as whole.
